In October 1972, a tragic event marked the history of aviation and sports. A rugby team, rather than a soccer team, crashed in the Andes Mountains. The team was Old Christians Club from Uruguay, and the incident is famously known as the “Andes Flight Disaster”.
The Flight
On October 12, 1972, a Fairchild FH-227D aircraft carrying 45 passengers and crew, including members of the Old Christians Club rugby team, boarded a chartered flight. They were en route from Montevideo, Uruguay, to Santiago, Chile. However, due to inclement weather and navigational errors, the plane crashed into the Andes Mountains.
The Crash
Out of the 45 people on board, 12 died instantly, and several others succumbed to their injuries in the days following the crash. The survivors found themselves in a dire situation, stranded in a remote snowy region with limited food supplies and little hope for rescue.
Survival in the Andes
Surviving in such harsh conditions required unimaginable resilience and ingenuity. The survivors faced starvation, exposure to extreme cold, and avalanche threats. With limited food supplies from the plane’s provisions, they were forced to make a harrowing decision to survive. They resorted to eating the deceased passengers, an act that was later described as an ultimate act of survival out of sheer necessity.
Rescue
Their ordeal lasted an astonishing 72 days. Several rescue efforts failed initially due to the difficult terrain and adverse weather conditions. However, two of the survivors, Nando Parrado and Roberto Canessa, embarked on an arduous 10-day trek through the mountains to find help. Eventually, they encountered a Chilean shepherd who alerted the authorities.
On December 20, 1972, helicopters were dispatched, and the remaining survivors were rescued. In total, 16 of the original 45 passengers survived the harrowing ordeal.
The Aftermath
The Andes Flight Disaster left an indelible mark on the world, highlighting both the fragility and the resilience of the human spirit. The survivors’ story has been depicted in various forms, including the 1993 movie “Alive”, based on the book “Alive: The Story of the Andes Survivors” by Piers Paul Read. In addition, several of the survivors have written memoirs detailing their harrowing experience.
